It's verses like this that put a smile on my face. I still very much love reading the Bible and when I come across verses (so many, in fact) that could easily be placed in the Qur'an, I have such a warm and happy feeling. Why do people have no interest in learning about other faiths and only want to attempt to bring down other beliefs? I mean, I've met a few people who feel the need to try and convert me back to Christianity, yet, they've never even took a step into learning about Islam by reading the Qur'an. Some even have said "I have no interest." Well, if you have no interest in reading the Qur'an, I highly suggest you take a step back and forget to even try and talk religion with me. It makes no sense, no sense at all.
I say this even in regards to Muslims. When trying to talk religion with non-Muslims (Christian, let's say) and making dawah, I HIGHLY suggest knowing more about their beliefs and opening the Bible to read. It shows that you have enough respect for different beliefs to learn, yet you still have the good intention to teach them what you feel is true. Now, don't pick up the Bible just to refute it. Have good intentions. Look for verses that can benefit your personal life and verses that can fit right in with Islam.
Just a thought.

I too read the Bible regularly for cross reference.
ReplyDeleteFunny you just said that because I was watching a debate a few days ago, and I got the feeling that the Muslim scholar wanted Muslims to think that he had all the answers (when it comes to religious interpretation) so we shouldn't even pick up the Bible and see what is written in there.
On the other hand, after I converted, it took a while of me studying the Quran to really get to a place where I wasn't always comparing the teachings on both side.
It was difficult.
Salam alaikum sis.
Very good post Elisa, glad you are back with these beautiful thoughts.
ReplyDeleteI too read the Bible and the Qu'ran. I would love to read the Torah as well.
I think you can really discuss religion with people when you know about their beliefs. You don't have to accept them, but by respecting them, you can build a bridge.
Take care dear.
