Near death experiences?

Assalaamu alaykum lovies!

I've been thinking about near death experiences for a while now. Many times I've heard of Christians and non-Christians having these experiences and coming back a stronger believer in God and Jesus. It made me think about Muslims having these experiences as well, but I haven't found anything in regards to it. Has anyone else heard of a Muslim having a near death experience? I recently finished reading a book about this one woman's experience of dieing for 28 minutes, going to heaven, and coming back to life. Also, I am interested in reading Don Piper's book called 90 Minutes in Heaven. I find these peoples experiences rather fascinating, but am unsure where it stands in Islam.

  1. In islam there is no such thing as a near death experience, since if someone didn't die than that wasn't near death, only Allah Subhana Wa Ta'ala can cause death...he doesn't "accidently" bring you to death and then bring you back again. Thats why no one should say things like "i almost drowned" because obviously you didn't, if you were meant to drown you would have, it was never written for you. Plus Allah Subhana Wa Ta'ala will only have us die once, and then wait for the day of Resurrection. I get what you mean though lol. Those stories can be very entertaining, even though none of them are true. Anyone who isn't muslim won't go to heaven. For example the Uncle Abu Talib, who was the uncle of the Prophet Sallallhu Alayhi wasalaam. He defended our Prophet and kept him safe at a time that was very dangerous and harsh for him. We could say that he was "good". He even admitted that he knew Islam was the best religion, however he said that he dies on the religion of his forfathers. Because of this he will go to hell, and have the lightest of punishments there which is shoes made of fire that will make his brain boil. He is also the exception in getting the lightest punishment only due to Prophet Muhammed Sallallahu Alayhi Sallam praying for him after he died. When he prayed for him Allah Subhana Wa Ta'ala said you are not even allowed to pray for someone who has died and died kaffir. This has been recorded in Al-Bukhari and others so if anyone is to say this is a lie, then they are a deceiver. And if they do not believe in Al-Bukhari or others of the like, then they do not understand Islam at all and you should be very careful of them.

*sorry btw lol I've had to deal with people in the blogging world who reject some of the best people (such as Al-Bukhari and Muslim) and hadiths only because they like to follow their own heart and feelings. They don't like the fact that their non-muslim family, if they die upon kuffar, will enter Jahannam. I can't stand people like this.

  3. AlabasterMuslim,

I find your strong faith in Islam very admirable, masha'allah. Thank you for taking the time to explain these things to me. Although there are a few points I'm not 100% convinced upon yet, insha'allah I will be if they are what's right and true. For example, you said that all non muslims will not go to heaven. In the Qur'an it does say that Christians and Jews have their place in heaven. Therefore, these non Muslims have their chance in paradise as well. Also, I knew about not praying for the non believers after they have passed away, but does this mean we are not to pray for our Christian and Jewish believers as well? This is something I have thought a lot about.
As for near death experiences, I question the validity of it based on the fact that there are people who have been pronounced dead by doctors and such and then came back to life. If, in fact, they did not die I do believe it possible for Allah (swt) to select some of us to have visions of paradise. I'm not sure though.

  4. Ive heard stories too. Things about people's heart stopping momentarily on an operating table and having 'out of body' experiences. Literally lol. But no Islamic ones to date...sorry. Let us know if you find any? Would be interesting to hear!

  5. I have been wondering about what AlabasterMuslim said as well.
I introduce myself first, I am a Christian - catholic to be precised. I am interested in knowing more about Islam, as I am on a religious search right now.
A bit unsure of whether non muslim are definitely heading for Hell, I have asked my Fiance / Husband to be about this and for him, who is muslim, he thinks nobody knows only Allah (Peace be upon Him)and that as all religion are directing believers to the same major responsabilities (such as helping our brother/sister, not to steal, not to kill, not to commit adultery or make false staements, respect our parents and pray for the salvation of the ones that are on the wrong path), nobody could be evicted from Paradise just on the basis of the Religion.
It is a bit hard for me to believe that Allah (Peace be upon Him) would do such a distinction.

I hope one day Jews, Christians and Muslims will live in peace respecting each other and understand that they all pray the same God, and so should work hand in hand for bringing back the lost ones.

As for near death experiences I do not believe it exists. These stories entertain people, that's all.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us all. All the best

  6. Marie,

It's so nice to "meet" you :) I would have to say I agree with your husband. Only Allah can say where anyone will go. We, as humans, have no right to judge and make that assumption. I, too, hope that one day we can all live together in peace, insha'allah.
As for near death experiences, I find it hard not to believe in them since there are so many people who claim to have had them. It's one of those things that can really frustrate me if I think about it too much. Islam says it doesn't happen, but so many people have experienced them.
Also, since you are at the beginning of your Islamic journey I want to give you this great site with TONS of resources:
    www.kalamullah.com
Seriously, it's awesome! Also, please stop by again. I would love to keep up with where you're at in your spiritual/religious life. There are MANY wonderful sisters out here in the internet world!! Alhamdulillah!!
    Assalaamu alaykum :)
