Domestic or International?

Assalaamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

Now that I have all doors open to me for my future, I am really thinking about where I should apply for work. My heart truly is in the international social work field, but how can I go about finding a job abroad? Also with my very limited language skills I guess only few countries would be open for me. Although, I wouldn't mind taking language classes in another country in order to work with the people there (really thinking Morocco on this one). So, if you had the opportunity to work abroad in any country, which would you choose? Inspire me! LoL
As for domestic, if I did stay here in America my main areas of focus for looking for work would be the East coast. More specifically, the DC metro area (includes Maryland and Virginia), Central to South Florida, and possibly Atlanta. Any social workers out there reading this that know of any open positions? Nothing in the medical field though!

Would love to read your ideas :)

Salaam

  1. Salaams Lovely,

I think youd be a great international social worker and international social workers are always in demand. What languages do you speak besides english? A great place to start is english speaking countries like the UK.

http://www.ifsw.org/ heres a link on international social work

Here is a link on info needed to work in the UK as an international social worker
    http://www.gscc.org.uk/

Working in Morocco would be wonderful however social services are almost non existent there and getting government help in opening an agency would be very difficult but not impossible.

I miss working but here in Spain you have to be fluent in spanish to work as a social worker.

If I could work anywhere Id work in N. Africa!!!

Also, volunteering at local agencies is a great way to gain more experience (something all agencies look for when hiring a social worker).

InshaAllah you will find an amazing job!!!!

    XoXo

  3. Thanks for the links, Rene! I'll be looking at them shortly :) It's pretty exciting to have so many options open! I found a Human Rights Internship available in Morocco that I would LOOOOVE to do, but it costs too much money. Insha'Allah I will find a way to afford it. Also, they prefer the intern to speak at least French. Ummmmm, yeah I don't think that will happen. LoL I would love to move to Morocco and take language classes for Darija though. I just loooove their language!

I've looked into teaching abroad as well, but I can't see myself as being a very good teacher. I don't think my mind is organized enough for it. LoL Maybe I'll look into it again though :)

  4. Elisa, you should definitely try a year abroad. It is a great way to improve your knowledge and interact with different people. I think lots of organizations are looking for international social worker.
You can also try to go abroad as an English Assistant - you don't have to be as organised and as busy as a teacher but you get to teach your language to kids in a more funny way.
Surely you'll find what suits you the best. Take care.

  6. Come to spain! Having spanish as a second language is a HUGE bonus as a social worker =) They are always looking for english teachers here (you dont need a degree in english, you just need to take an exam, pass it and you can teach) Plus........ we could hang out often =)

I think working abroad as an intern is a fantastic idea. Im sure there are many agencies who would cover your expenses in exchange for you working with them as an intern.

  8. Hi from your newest gfc follower, thought I would also add my bit. I just recently took a TEFL course, teaching English to Foreign Learners course. Once you pass the fairly easy course your options are open to travel around the world to teach English to students in many different countries. Some countries are strict in that you need to have a degree first, some are not. I was really surprised when I took the course at the different types of people wanting to do this. Some agencies sort out your flights and accommodation too! Not sure how it works from the USA as I am in the UK but you could look into it. I only did the course as a back up if me and my family move abroad and need some extra income, but if I was free to travel I definately would do it! Would love it, inshallah if you popped by my blogs, Karima :) www.karimascrafts.com and www.karimasblogs.blogspot.com

  9. Salaam Karima! Thank you for the comment. . .I already spoke with a TEFL advisor so I may seriously decide to do this one day. I'm not sure when, but maybe one day :) Have you had the chance to use your skills yet?
I will be checking out your blog!!!
    Keep in touch :)
